Project Description: Our team recently completed a targeted asphalt widening and comprehensive resurfacing project for a residential property in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. This project combined a 90-square-foot excavation to widen a tight curve with a full 1,764-square-foot driveway overlay, creating a safer, more functional entry that effortlessly handles vehicular traffic.
The first phase focused on widening the narrow curve. To achieve this, our crew excavated the existing lawn along the shoulder, digging down to accommodate a deep, heavy-duty foundation. We backfilled the 90-square-foot cutout with 6 inches of 2A modified stone, meticulously compacting the aggregate base in distinct layers to eliminate voids and guarantee maximum structural stability. Over this robust foundation, we paved 3.5 inches of modified asphalt binder, carefully rolling the material to match the slope of the existing driveway and completely sealing the outer edges to prevent future water intrusion and edge crumbling.
Simultaneously, we prepped the remaining 1,764 square feet of the existing driveway for a full restoration. After thoroughly clearing the surface of debris, we overlaid the entire area with 2 inches of modified binder asphalt. This comprehensive resurfacing seamlessly integrated the old pavement with the new, widened curve, establishing a uniform, high-density surface.
In Western Pennsylvania, proper base compaction and edge sealing are vital to protect the driveway from shifting or cracking during winter freeze-thaw cycles. By maintaining meticulous grading standards, we ensured correct water runoff away from the driveway shoulders.
